Guests learn how to set up the equipment and cast with a professional instructor. We then tie on a fly, find the fish and attempt to hook, play and land Trout .... after Trout .... after Trout! These action packed fly fishing courses are ideal for Novice anglers keen to learn how to cast a fly and start catching fish. All of our services are tailored to individual requirements and tuition is available throughout the year including weekends / week days, on a variety of venues. Our courses also represent terrific value considering that hourly tuition rates for full time professional instructors average from £35.00 to £45.00 across the U.K.

FAQ - 1 - Do guests need to be Experienced?

NO! We specialise in introducing Novices to fly fishing. In fact no experience often means that there are no engrained bad habits to solve. So if you know someone who has never tried any kind of fishing but always wanted to give it a go we can help. Please call 01398 323008 to make further enquiries.

FAQ - 2 - Do guests need equipment?

NO! We teach our guests using high quality equipment by world famous manufacturers Hardy & Greys. Many novice anglers purchase equipment "blind" and often end up wasting their hard earned cash on unecessary items or poorly balanced outfits. We are able to fit equipment to each individuals specific needs and advise on purchases to ensure when setting up for the first time that the best value for money is achieved.

FAQ - 3 - Where will Nick Hart Fly Fishing courses be hosted?

Nick Hart Fly Fishing is based in the beautiful West Country, nestling on the Devon & Somerset borders, just a stones throw from the Exmoor National Park. However depsite our glorious position we are easily reached from J27 of the M5, little more than a 30 minute drive from this major motorway. We are positioned on a stunning lake, overlooking the River Exe, providing the perfect base for our novice angler guests to begin their journey into the world of fly fishing.

FAQ - 4 - What will guests learn during a Nick Hart Fly Fishing course?

We dont like to list a timetable of events, after all, trying fly fishing for the first time should be a fun, enjoyable experience far removed from the regimented constraints of a classroom. Our policy is to provide tuition in a relaxed, informal environment with plenty of practical experience spent actually fishing. During these lively sessions we aim to provide tuition in the following techniques although all our courses are tailored to individual requirements. No matter how relaxed or serious our guests are about learning; we have something for all!

  • Setting Up Equipment
  • Roll Cast & Overhead Casting (3 day course may also include Double Haul technique)
  • Leader Set Up and Knots Advice
  • Fish Diet & Matching with Relevant Flies - Basic Entomology
  • Finding Fish & Selecting Relevant Tactics
  • How to Hook, Play & Land Fish ( 2 day and 3 day courses may inlcude Lake & River venues)
  • Water Safety
  • Further Steps to Successful Fly Fishing
  • After the Course - Telephone & Email Assistance.

FAQ - 5 - Do our guests have to share their time with other people on the course?

Only friends and family. We specialise in one to one, groups of friends or families and have done so for well over a decade. While our competitors may offer cut price days for group tuition, our experience shows that people booking these courses rarely achieve their aims. Occasionally we may host a group event but generally these are offered to anglers with experience. Enquiries regarding Stag Parties, Hen Parties, Retirement Events, Birthdays and Corporate Days are welcomed. Please phone 01398 323008 and ask for Nick, Lewis or Sue who will be able to provide further information.

FAQ - 6 - When is the best time to visit?

Novice Courses are available throughout the year as there is no close season on small stillwater venues. However in the interests of comfort we recommend that the best time to book courses is from early April through to late October.

FAQ - 7 - Is there accommodation nearby?

YES! Nick Hart Fly Fishing is close to a wide variety of hand picked accommodation. Our list includes Country House Hotels, Bed & Breakfasts, Self Catering Cottages & Camping. Our guests favourite is the Three Acres Country House situated just 5 minutes from the shores of the lake on which we host our courses! There are also some fantastic restaurants and gastro pubs in the area providing the perfect end to an exciting day of fishing. In particular we enjoy the delights of the award winning Woods restaurant, the pure class of the Tongdam Thai and the cosiness of the Bridge Inn at Dulverton. Please note that accommodation, meals, drinks and extended travel arrangements are NOT INCLUDED within Nick Hart Fly Fishing course fees. All inclusive packages are available by prior arrangement, please call 01398 323008 for further information.

FAQ - 8 - What activities are available for non anglers?

The West Country has much to offer outdoor people in general. Walking is high on the agenda of course (although we prefer a walk with a fishing rod!) with miles of incredible scenery to enjoy and well marked paths, many of which conclude at the doorstep of a decent pub! If walking is a litte sedate then why not take to Horse back for a traditional journey across Exmoor although Mountain Bikes are fast becoming the modern alternative. Water sports are also available including Kayaking and as we are situated a short distance from some of the best Surfing breaks in the UK, this is another option. In fact we know a good few surfers who love taking to the waves with a rod in search of Bass just as much as they love riding a board. Photography Courses are available, head to a local Spa or just kick back, relax and enjoy Exmoor in the company of a good book. Although not all venues are suitable, many non anglers join their fishing partners during courses or meet them for lunch. So, even if partners do not want to attend a fishing course we are pleased to be able to organise suitable activites for them to enjoy while their loved one enjoys their special day.

FAQ - 9 - Can transportation be arranged?

YES! We are able to organise ground transport providing both airport and train station pick ups/drop offs for an additional fee. The nearest train station is Tiverton Parkway and the nearest airports are Exeter and Bristol. International guests are advised to fly into Gatwick or Heathrow. If a non fishing partner needs a car we are fully insured to transport fishing guests in style using our top of the range Nissan 4x4 to local venues or provide pick ups from local accommodation. This service does not incur any additional fees.

FAQ - 10 - Can I purchase a course as a gift?

YES! Our popular Gift Vouchers make a great present that can be treasured for years to come. Ideal for celebrating Birthdays, Christmas, Retirements and more! Vouchers are personalised, complete with a greetings card, full information pack/booking details and dispatched in plain envelopes to ensure surprises are not spoiled! Vouchers are valid for 2 years from the date of purchase and can be transferred for alternative Hart Flyshop services including guided fly fishing for Trout, Salmon, Pike, Bass, fly fishing courses and/or tackle. For more information regarding fly fishing vouchers please see our dedicated page here or call 01398 323008 and we will be happy to assist. Vouchers are a truly memorable present that may open the door to a lifelong interest!

MEET THE INSTRUCTORS

Nick Hart is the founder of Nick Hart Fly Fishing and owner of Hart Flyshop. He grew up on the shores of beautiful West Country streams and lakes, developing his skills fly fishing for Wild Brown Trout before moving into Rainbow Trout on both small stillwaters and large reservoirs. Upon leaving college Nick was coached by arguably one of the most famous fly fishermen in the world, Simon Gawesworth, before becoming a full time fly fishing instructor in his early twenties. Since those formative years Nick Hart Fly Fishing has become one of Europes best known Fly Fishing Schools hosting daily courses to thousands of individuals over the years. Nick prides himself on relaxed, informal tuition passed to guests in a practical format while enjoying the surrounding beauty of the West Country. Learning to fly fish should be a fun experience in Nicks eyes, suitable for people from all walks of life, keen to beat the stresses and strains of daily routine by emersing themselves in the wonderfully absorbing world of Fly Fishing.

Lewis Hendrie is one of the most exciting up and coming UK instructors to hit the scene in recent years. Lewis trained as an instructor with Nick Hart and has already been teaching for over 4 years even though he is only in his early twenties. His youthful enthusiasm is infectious and during his time teaching with Nick Hart Fly Fishing, Lewis has already built up a long list of regular clients. A specialist River angler, Lewis is constantly seeking new techniques and has enjoyed a great deal of success on the competition fly fishing scene.

Our instructors have an intimate knowledge of each venue and the surrounding area. We can help find you the right accommodation, set up transport arrangements and even book your restaurant for some post fishing R&R. Tackle by Hardy & Greys is included whenever required, plus all relevant permits and licences are taken care of. It is our desire to ensure that guests learn new fly fishing skills in beautiful surroundings with none of the usual organisation that goes into a successful fly fishing holiday. Both Nick & Lewis work in the fly fishing industry on a full time basis and are ready to help you develop your knowledge of equipment, fly casting, entomology, fly fishing tactics, fish finding ability and fly pattern selection. All their guests need do is turn up and enjoy.
